To Infinity and Beyond

It’s no secret that Alex Liollio is knowledgeable in all things having to do with space, injuries to the body, the good man jack, and loud unintelligible voices. Coincidentally, all of these things are also related to the beginning of our relationship.

The Good Man Jack

I first met Alex before I actually met him. Confused? I would be too. You won’t be when I explain that the same night I met him was the weekend of his 23rd birthday and he was already filling out his obligations to Jack Daniel’s. I met Alex for a brief moment at the AIGA Raleigh Casino Night event. However, I use the term “met” loosely because we didn’t actually meet… I was introduced to Alex when all the people around me started yelling, “Happy Birthday Alex, you need another shot”.

Loud Unintelligible Voices

The second time I met Alex was at Players Retreat. I heard stories about this guy with the weird last name and “cosmic” personality and never thought much about it until I was sitting across from him. He was making loud obnoxious voices for a knife shaped like a Peruvian tribal character and laughing at himself while doing so. I felt an urge inside of me to laugh at his silly actions, yet I held it in. He seemed comfortable with his friends but somewhat distant from this new girl sitting across from him. Most of the night had passed before either one of us really said a word to each other.

At this point, Alex comes up to me and introduces himself. I instantly laugh and say, “I have already met you”. The expression on Alex’s face looks like I just told him Santa Claus wasn’t real. I quickly say “at Casino Night”. He laughs and tells me to excuse his actions for that night. We proceed to geek out on several graphic design topics and neither of us seems to mind. At the end of the night Alex said he would like to see me again and we set up our first date.

Injuries to the Body

Our first date happened about a week later. Panera, that was good for me, not too fancy, perfect for a first date. I knew the conversation with Alex would be easy but what I didn’t know was that we would talk about blood for the first 15 minutes of our date. Ok, let me back up here… We had scheduled our first date for dinner after work. I had a giant project at work that needed to be finished before I could leave. I feverishly worked through the day and around 5:00 I realized I was not going to be able to make it to our date. Seriously, who cancels the first date? This girl, I guess. I called Alex to tell him I wouldn’t be able to make it.

We ended up moving the time of our date until later that night. While I was at work trying to finish up mock-ups for this project, my boss cut his finger with an Exacto blade. Luckily, it wasn’t a bad cut. Never the less, something to bring up on the first date… right? Ok, so back to Panera. Alex and I meet up at Panera and I instantly apologized for delaying our date. I proceeded to tell him about the crazy project that kept me late at work and how my boss cut his finger. Now, we all know Alex’s personality and you can only imagine his excitement to talk about injuries. He proceeded to tell me about the plethora of injuries he has obtained over the years while I volley back injuries that my family members had over the years. This goes on for some time when I finally blurt out “We have been talking about blood for 15 minutes on our first date”. We both laugh and I tell one more blood story.

All Things Having to do with Space

After our first date and several phone conversations later, I discovered how Alex geeks out on Outer Space. Of course, being the kind-hearted person that I am, I used this as ammunition to make fun of him. “Do you know how to speak Klingon?’ “I bet you can name all the Star-Trek seasons”, “You know the radius of the Death Star?”… Ok, I made up that last one but you get the picture.

For our second date, I told Alex I wanted him to take me somewhere nice. This was a test. I wanted him to pick a nice place, not to take me wherever I said. He passed. He took me to Red Lobster. He showed up wearing a “Cosmic Alex” t-shirt that he had picked out special for our date. Nice. We sat down for dinner and our crazy waitress loved him. She told me that I had someone special and I should never let him go. That is when I first realized what a great catch I had (no pun intended with the seafood reference) and the rest is history.

 Renaissance man…

We all know Alex the artist. I remember watching him throughout middle and high school in admiration. But School of the Arts was a great place to discover new talents. Alex demonstrated this by literally becoming the definitive role of the jester in art smart. Until then I had no idea that Alex would become a method actor, the only problem being that he has not had another role and he’s still acting as the jester today. Aside from thespian, Alex engaged himself in music.

From a drummer, with or without drums (just give him a good counter top and he will blow you away with wipeout), to singer and rapper. Many a day Alex and I would take on anyone with enough courage in rap battles. Alex spits hot fire likely from the volcanoes of Greece herself. Alex is also an accomplished break dancer and can light up any stage with the Latino favorites Salsa and the Merengue (as I watched him dance with my aunt form Puerto Rico). He is also quite the linguist. As all of you know, he speaks English, but did you know that he speaks Greek? You probably do, but did you know that he speaks CHC? Only two people in the world can speak that language, I’m one, and Alex is the other. That’s right, a secret code language.

A man of many names…

For everyone who is an old, new or recent friend of Alex, you know that we have many nicknames for this guy. I have always wondered why he never seems to have a nickname that is a real word. There are a variety of nicknames that are ever evolving and becoming more complex and ridiculous such as just plain Bilbo, Boobers, liolliollio, and all the varieties etc… But almost nothing that can be fixed by a spell check. I think I have found the answer. Alex is such a complex and amazing individual that no one nickname fits. Not only that, but we have to constantly change his nickname as we discover new and exciting aspects of the Liollio. Even more interesting is that though he has moved away from his original home where these nicknames started, they seem to have begun again with out even realizing it, demonstrating that it is truly Alex who personifies these wild and outlandish nicknames.

The Gift of Giving…

It’s been over 10 years now since I first came across the Liollio and I have discovered that Alex is kinda like Santa clause. He is very giving. But instead of giving a black board, chutes and ladders or tricycles and puppies, Alex gives people stories. He does this in two ways. One, he tells stories, and two, sometimes people just witness weird things that happen to Alex. I’m mostly the latter, and Alex has been very generous. Very generous!

You all know Alex now, but imagine Alex with raging horomones. Yes, puberty was a wonderful chapter in the Liollio’s life! So many great memories! I remember us walking through the mall at “mack speed”; you know, like mack daddy? (the pace that was ideal for getting the attention of girls), taking pictures of each other at the Columbia Zoo where there just ‘happened’ to be beautiful girls standing behind us. Alex’s first attempt of growing a beard (which as we all know is magnificent now) and his mom saying that “it was nice that he grew some friends, now they just need to hold hands to look thicker.”  Lets see…chess during recess, soccer, that wild yoyo phase, fingers to the face, gorgeous clouds, and that base ball swing.

Alex loves baseball. He loved it so much that when we were in line at the fair he would practice his swing with an invisible bat. It was at the fair that we went on the ring of fire. We bragged about the feat we had accomplished while walking around the fair grounds and understanding that what we had just done…was…amazing. The most exciting part was being there without parental supervision, I mean…we were men. After about 20 minutes of walking we were laughing and cutting up when Alex suddenly stops in mid stride, stares into space as if visualizing a moment in time that he had just stumbled upon. It was like he had a time machine in his brain that took him back and freeze framed a single moment. And as quickly as this stare happened, Alex darted off into a sea of fair goers. We later found Alex clutching his wallet that had fallen during the ring of fire ride. I can only imagine what he had to do to find and retrieve that thing.

Going to Florida…

Our first trip to Florida was with School of the Arts for a performing arts festival. There are two things that really stick out in my mind. Here is a little background…Almost the entire school went. The students performed in different theme parks. Each group had a different time to perform, and when you were done, you could enjoy the park. Simple enough, or was it? Through a chain of events, Alex was left at the hotel and did not get to perform. In addition, we had to bring a change of clothes to the park so we did not have to stay in a tuxedo. It was fate that Alex would bring his change, but not his tennis shoes. That’s right; he walked in his shiny black shoes all day with white socks, khaki shorts and a t-shirt. But we still had a blast.

Me and Alex took our first road trip to Florida after graduating high school. Nothing too embarrassing here, but it was a great time and we had a lot of fun. We drove down in his white Jeep Cherokee and stayed with my aunt and uncle in Middleburg Florida, just outside of Jacksonville. This is where we learned Salsa and Merengue. Alex also serenaded my aunt and uncle and his sister from Puerto Rico with Semi Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind as I accompanied him on guitar.

Our next trip down was to Daytona Beach where we stayed for a week. CRAZY good times. Lots and lots of great stories! We met a lot of interesting people and took advantage of our ocean front hotel. We made the trip with Robert Silverstein and Bobby Thompson. We invented the movie game for the ride up, and it made the trip seem like it took 30 minutes.

A great guy…

The stories I have shared have really just scratched the surface of what is in my heart. I could never ask for a better friend. He has always stood up for me, been there when others could not be found, and truly helped me to become a better person. We’ve been through a lot together and I feel like he is truly my life long friend. Though are lives have taken separate paths, we always keep in touch. We forged a bond long ago that will always be. Alex is a great guy and I wish him the happiest of birthdays.

Pink Monkeys For Breakfast?

Alex’s first visit to Iowa/Illinois…and all he wanted to do was eat pink monkeys!  I was wondering if that’s a cavity that I see on that tooth!

Marcia Nelson (Dan Barnes’ Aunt)

Speed Limit – Just a Recommendation

I met Alex Liollio during our Freshman year at Clemson University.  When his father introduced us and told me his son enjoyed baseball and ping pong, I immediately knew we’d be friends.  Through my six plus years of knowing Alex, we’ve shared some great times that will neir soon be forgotten.  From the thrills of freshman year, to the crazy roadtrips (by plane, air, and sea, (Charleston Harbor ), to my status as his current roomate, it’s been a pleasure getting to know the man, the myth, the legend that is Alex Liollio.  Of course, this is a roast and no time to get sentimental, so let’s share some stories.  Below is one of my favorites:

Roadtrip to Davenport, Iowa and Chicago, Illinois

In June of 2005 my Dad graduated from an MBA program through the University of Indiana and was having a big get together for friends and family in my hometown of Davenport, IA, a pretty big moment in his life.  At the time I was down in South Carolina, working over the summer and generally biding my time before going back to Clemson University for my Senior Year.  Really wanting to get back home to celebrate, but not wanting to drive the 13 hours it takes to get home, I picked up the phone and dialed.  Enter Alex Liollio.

I think it was a Monday or Tuesday night when Liollio answered and I told him that I’d be leaving for Iowa/Illinois Thursday after work, only a day or two away.  “Dude, are you serious?” I must have only been five seconds before Liollio uttered those words I’ve heard a thousand times.  “Dude, I’m down.”

After travelling through the night in my Miata, we finally arrived in the Quad Cities at my aunt and uncles house.  I think it was five in the morning and we were feeling the effects of a night of travel.  However, as we would soon experience, this was only the first leg of an epic journey.

The trip overall was a huge success.  I showed Liollio the lock and dam system on the Mississippi River, miles upon miles of cornfields, to which he was unusually fascinated at how they seemed to ripple like the ocean as we traveled down I-80, and we even attended the Quad City Greek Fest, where I watched in embarrased amuzement as Liollio jumped into a circle of complete strangers and danced to the music of his ancestors.  While in Iowa, we even ventured out to the oldest soda fountain in the United States, situated in a one stoplight Iowa town typical of the midwest.

Well, it happens this fine establishment wasrun by a Greek Family, and as you can imagine it didn’t take Liollio long to introduce himself to the woman behind the counter, who amazingly had operated the soda fountain for over 60 years.  In a turn of events that wasn’tcompletely shocking, Liollio started up a conversation in Greek.  She must have been impressed by his proficiency or enthusiasm because it wasn’t long before Liollio was behind the counter in full “diner atire” fixing the entire meals for myself, my sister, my brother and a couple of his friends who had come along.  The waitress literally MADE him cook and wait on us.  It was classic.

However, as good as this little story was, it’s not even the best.  As you probably noticed, this article is entitled Davenport, Iowa and CHICAGO, a city I have yet to mention.  Anyway, the weekend was a great success as we toasted my father over glasses of wine and rich food at a classy Italian restaurant called Biaggi’s on Saturday night.  As the the weekend started to wind down I started thinking about the 13 hours we had to drive the next day.  Little did I know other things were on Liollio’s mind.

Before the night was done, Liollio had convinced me that since we had come this far, we might as well travel a little farhter to Chicago.  It was, as he said on our way back…sort of.  “Dude, it’s only 2 hours away, c’mon man.” (well more like 3, but you know Liollio)  Wanting to show my friend a good time I reluctantly agreed, knowing full well that I had to be back at work for a Monday morning shift at the Olive Garden, a slightly less classy Italian restaurant in Anderson, SC.

As we ventured in Windy City, I don’t think we could have seen more.  (From Navy Pier, to Soldier Field, to Wrigley Field, to the top of the Sears Tower, to the Apple Store on Michigan Ave, it seemed like we saw it all.)  I remeber at one point, as we walked through Millenium Park and past the new age public amphitheatre, we were two of the only white people in a crowd of probably 5,000 rocking out to the Chicago Gospel Choir show.  Of course Liollio fits in with anyone.

As Sunday afternoon turned into Sunday evening, I starting getting a little antsy.  I called work to see if it was possible for anyone to cover my shift in the morning, but there is no money for a server on a Monday morning for a semi-fine dining family establishment, so I didn’t have any takers.  I told them I was in a different time zone at the moment and asked what the punishment would be if I missed or was a little late.  “You should probably show up,” my boss told me.  In restaurant terms that obviously means, “you better be there or don’t bother coming in on Tuesday” so I told Liollio we had to go.

It was about 9:30 PM and we had both been walking all day and extremely hungry.  I don’t know who’s idea it was but knowing that literally we needed to leave at that current moment to get back in time for work, we decided instead to sit down to a nice meal at Giordano’s Pizza, the best Chicago deep dish around.  Looking back on it now, the pizza was definitely woth it, but at the time I recall being a little nervous.

After paying the bill we were finally out the door by 10:30 PM and out of Chicago by 11 PM.  I had to work at 10:30 AM the next morning and with the time change, this gave us a little over 10 hours to get home, shower and be at work, which actually happened to be thirty minutes further down the road.  It was at this time that I’ve seen dedication like no other.

Liollio literally made it his mission to get me back in time for work.  “Dude, trust me, you’re getting back in time,” were about the only words I remember throughout the night.  I feel bad because I fell asleep pretty early on in the trip, but by the time I woke up and glanced over to Liollio to ask where we were he had a big grin on his face and said nonshalantly, “Um, we’re about 3 hours away.”  Funny thing was, it was still pitch black outside.  He had driven the six mile stretch through Indiana and Kentucky in a ridiculously fast time.  Literally averaging triple digits.  Through a six hour stretch.

As we pulled into Clemson, SC it was only 9:30 AM.  I had time to take a shower, shave, drive to work and probably pay a few bills online before the shift started.  To this I am indebted to my good friend Alex Liollio.  Of course, I got fired from the job two weeks later, but that’s a different story.  Here’s to Alex Liollio, a good friend and comrade for life.

Alex the Liar

While we have many fond memories and humorous moments spent with Alex, I must expound on an event which occurred in September 2007.  Dan, Alex, and Alex were bound for St. Louis to visit Karen and attend a CUBS/Cardinals game series.  The 3 “boys” had decided to meet at the Barnes’ house so Kathi could drive them to the airport to catch their flight.  Dan and Alex Ford traveled together and arrived at the allotted time, but Liolio failed to show.

We called to see if he was close and were informed he had left work and was on his way.  He still didn’t arrive and time was getting short.  Another call was made and Alex informed us that he had just exited the interstate and was on his way onto Leesville Rd, less than 5 minutes from our house.  Since Alex has been known to take a few liberties in his story telling, and his timing was not as it should have been, we decided he just outright lied to us so we wouldn’t leave without him.  Dan said, “Alex, our flight leaves in 45 minutes and it takes 15 to get to the airport!”

Finally pulling into the drive, Alex jumped out of the car, grabbed a pile of clothes and a travel bag (he hadn’t packed yet) and jumped into the back seat of the Barnes’ car for the ride to the airport.  As we zipped through the rain, hoping against hope that the security line at airport would be short and they would actually make their flight, we gave Alex grief about his tardiness, which he just didn’t seem to be too concerned about.

Upon arrival at the departure terminal, Alex opened the car door to discover his CUBS shirt, which he intended to wear to the game that night, had fallen out of his hands and gotten caught in the car door when he’d gotten in.  It was soaking wet and I remember he took an extra minute before heading inside to wring out the rain water.

The 3 actually did make their flight and the CUBS had a winning weekend, during which Alex wore the above mentioned shirt, no laundering involved!

We always enjoy time spent visiting with Alex and know for a fact, that if invited for dinner, left-overs will be non-existent and stories will abound!

On a more serious note Alex, we are pleased to be addressed as Mom & Dad when you come to visit and feel fortunate that Dan has such a good friend in you.  You fit in with any age group in any situation and we are always happy to include you as part of the family.  Happy Birthday Alex!

Peace will Guide the Planets

My words about Alex can only be expressed in lyrics from the hit broadway show: Hair!

When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars

This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius
The age of Aquarius
Aquarius!
Aquarius!

Harmony and understanding
Sympathy and trust abounding
No more falsehoods or derisions
Golden living dreams of visions
Mystic crystal revalation
And the mind’s true liberation
Aquarius!
Aquarius!

When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars

This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius
The age of Aquarius
Aquarius!
